Overview
Durham biotech incorporated in Delaware in 2017 as a UNC-Chapel Hill spinout. Co-founded by Anil Goyal with UNC immunologist Jenny Ting and Eshelman School of Pharmacy faculty Kristy Ainslie and Eric Bachelder. Science
Started as an inflammasome-inhibitor company for rare and prevalent auto-inflammatory diseases. Now discovers oral small-molecule BACH1 inhibitors, which activate the Nrf2 pathway to raise fetal hemoglobin and counter oxidative stress and inflammation. The systemic program targets sickle cell disease and other chronic conditions; the company retained brain-penetrant BACH1 inhibitors for neurological indications such as Parkinson's and Alzheimer's.
Funding
Early funding from the North Carolina Biotechnology Center (a Small Business Research Loan), NIH SBIR awards, and pharma collaborations. First venture round began December 2020: $6.9 million sold per the amended Form D, with Osage University Partners and Hatteras Venture Partners named by Innovate Carolina. A second equity offering began December 2022: $2.0 million sold of $4.0 million as of the January 2023 filing. Investors named in the 2025 release: Osage University Partners, Hatteras Venture Partners, Delin Ventures, and Alexandria Venture Investments.
Novo Nordisk collaboration
On January 22, 2025 the company announced a strategic collaboration and exclusive worldwide license agreement with Novo Nordisk for its systemic BACH1 program. The two advance the preclinical program to development candidate nomination together, after which Novo Nordisk takes over development, regulatory submissions, and commercialization. Terms were not disclosed.
Press
GlobeNewswire, Fierce Biotech, Triangle Business Journal, and NCBiotech covered the Novo Nordisk agreement in January 2025. CEO Anil Goyal spoke on NCBiotech's building-biotechs panel at ConvergeSouth 2026 and at Innovate Carolina's OTC Seminar Series in March 2026.
