Standout of the week
SelSym Biotech
Preclinical biotech developing synthetic platelet-mimetic therapeutics to stop bleeding at the point of injury.
Took its first equity financing from Persephoni Bio and will operate from Persephoni's RTP studio.
Persephoni Bio disclosed SelSym's first equity financing on July 15, naming itself lead investor and strategic partner and saying SelSym will run out of Persephoni's Clinical Impact Studio in Research Triangle Park. SelSym's lead candidate, SymClot, is a blood-type-agnostic synthetic platelet designed to control hemorrhage at the point of injury; the science originated in Ashley Brown's Advanced Wound Healing Lab at NC State. The financing amount and stage were not disclosed. The release calls the company Raleigh-based while its own site lists a Durham contact address, so the headquarters city is unresolved pending first-party confirmation.
Deep dives
Capital
3 rounds
One disclosed number and two financings without one. 410 Medical's $12M growth round is the week's headline figure; SelSym's first institutional money and Extellis adding Shell Ventures both came without company-level amounts.
Infrastructure
The student-founder pipeline supplied good news, with Launch Chapel Hill capping its first international accelerator. The incentive ledger supplied the other kind.
